Gwyneth Paltrow almost killed me. The actress-turned-lifestyle-guru so full-heartedly recommended Bestia, a new restaurant in Downtown LA’s Arts District, that I just had to check it out. The only problem? The restaurant was located in an old warehouse at the edge of the infamous and actually dangerous Skid Row.
To be honest, that wasn’t exactly the only problem. The biggest problem was that I and my friend decided to walk to the restaurant, which is not really something you do in LA. And we got lost, of course. Now I’ve always been an adventurous person, but sauntering around the streets of Skid Row at dusk is not something I’d recommend to anyone.
We ran into some very unsavory characters, and the strong aroma of homelessness and old urine, at every corner. A drug dealer waved his gun at us, and a homeless man tried to throw something at me.
Fear is deeply ingrained in us all, because it helps us stay alive. But this was not the time for fear. The only thing to do was just keep walking, just look straight ahead with a determined angry look and keep walking.
We didn’t die. We actually made it to the restaurant. It was alright. Not worth the risk of dying, but a solid choice. Looking back at it now, a few years later, the trip to the restaurant was far more memorable than the food itself. Still, I’ll definitely take an uber next time!
