Niagara Beyond the Falls

Whenever I think of Niagara, I mostly think about majestic waterfalls, and maybe that Marilyn Monroe film from 1953 where she was a murderer or maybe her husband was a murderer, I don’t really remember the details. I may be blurry on my film trivia knowledge, but I think most people would share my sentiment about the associations of the word Niagara.

And the falls truly are a natural wonder. But the town of Niagara doesn’t end there. And the reality of Niagara beyond the falls is not a pretty sight. The ultra-touristy town is loud and garish, surreal in its superficiality.

Clifton Hill, “the street of fun at the falls”, is perhaps the most blatantly fake spot on this earth. Every single thing about the place, from its casinos to the endless rows of fast food theme restaurants, seems constructed solely to service hoards of unexperienced tourists. The whole experience is like watching a movie that’s so bad it actually gets good again. You hate yourself for liking it, but it’s an undeniably good time…
